Shirley Ann Armstrong, 84, of Bolingbrook, IL passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on October 21, 2022 with family members by her side.
Shirley and her beloved husband, Rev. Dr. Robert (Bob) Armstrong, were married for 63 years but they knew each other for most of their lives. Shirley was born and raised in Chicago, IL and attended Marshall High School. She continued her education earning an Associate’s Degree in Real Estate and began working for US Homes. She also spent several years as a long distance telephone operator. Shirley and her family traveled the world through Bob’s military service and enjoyed assignments in the US, Germany, France, Spain, North Africa, and many other stateside and overseas locations. She was a friend to all and stayed in touch with many of the friends from her travels over the years.
Shirley and Bob became residents of Bolingbrook in 1976. Together, they were involved in many local organizations and stood as pillars in the community. For many years, Shirley was an active member of the Bolingbrook Senior Club, serving as President in 1998. She taught American Sign Language and was an interpreter for the deaf and hearing-impaired around the Chicagoland area. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society. Shirley and Bob were honored as Bolingbrook’s 1998 Family of the Year and on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary, June 13, 2009 was declared ROBERT AND SHIRLEY ARMSTRONG DAY in the Village of Bolingbrook. Shirley was known by many for her wit, beauty, and class. May she always be loved and remembered for the amazing woman she was to so many.
Shirley is preceded in death by her son Stephen Armstrong. She leaves behind to mourn her passing her loving sister Joan Murray; son Raymond (Laura) Armstrong; grandchildren April (Steve) Clark, Bobby (Diana) Armstrong, and Tim (Stephanie) Armstrong; great-grandchildren Kari Owens, Ben Armstrong, and Abby Armstrong; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
A visitation and service for Shirley will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at Jubilee Baptist Church at 660 Royce Road, Bolingbrook, IL immediately followed by a repast at First Baptist Church of Bolingbrook at 314 E. Briarcliff Road, Bolingbrook, IL. The burial will be a private ceremony with only close family members present.
