Deacon Michael P. McGuire
(Deacon Mike)
Deacon Michael (Mike) P. McGuire, of Naperville, Illinois passed away October 15, 2023, after a lengthy battle with medical issues.
Mike was born on January 4, 1945, to Lola (Hinton) McGuire and Thought William McGuire in Beech Grove, Indiana. After Mike graduated from St. Meinrad High School in 1963, he went on to study accounting at Marion College.
After graduating with an accounting degree, he started his first job at Central Soya as an accountant. (He liked to say he was an actual bean counter.) In 1970 Mike started his career with the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) as an analyst. Except for a brief time counting poultry for Weaver Poultry, he was with NCUA for 33 years. He was an Associate Regional Director for Region IV when he retired in 2004.
In 1967, Mike met Margaret (Maggie) (Bechtold) McGuire at Marion College, and they married on December 21, 1968, and went on to have two children, Michael and Mitchell. Mike strived to make sure Maggie and the boys were provided for and knew he loved them deeply every day through his actions and words.
Shortly before retiring from NCUA Mike felt the calling from God to become a Catholic Deacon for his parish. Mike joined the Diocese of Joliet Diaconate Program to complete his studies. He was ordained a Deacon in 2007. He served in many positions as a Deacon; he led the committee on stained glass windows and started the program Catholics Returning Home to name a few. He loved serving God and his parish as a Deacon.
In retirement he was active with his antique car clubs for Ford Skyliners both nationally and in Indiana and Illinois. He loved that since his retirement he could spend more time with Maggie and the boys. Mike visited and talked to his boys often.
Mike had many roles in his lifetime: son, brother, grandson, uncle, husband, father, friend, colleague, boss, treasurer, Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, car and train enthusiast, and problem solver. Mike enjoyed helping his family, friends, colleagues, parishioners, and strangers solve problems. He loved to learn and grow, and he did that by helping others with their issues. Maggie and his boys always knew where they could turn in times of need, and he would be there with the right words they needed to hear at that moment.
Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Lola (Hinton) McGuire; father, Thought William McGuire; sisters, Dorothy M. Lindsey and Gloria Jean Sanders; brother Roscoe J. Collins; his Aunt Mary Pieczora and Uncle Mitchell Pieczora. He is survived by wife Maggie; sons, Michael McGuire II (partner Renee Schmidt) and Mitchell McGuire; sister, Effie R. Lovins; brother, Ronnie McGuire; many nieces and nephews.
