Kenneth Irwin Obituary

Ken Irwin was a good man who lived a decent and honorable life. He passed away on April 8, 2026, at the age of 71, at his home in Bolingbrook, Illinois, with his wife, Eva Irwin, by his side.

Ken was raised in Tinley Park, Illinois, by his parents, Jeanette and George Irwin, alongside his brothers George, James, and Gary. He lived a full life of service and accomplishment, serving four years in the Navy, two years in the reserves, and working for the federal government for 31 years. In 1986, Ken graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Northeastern Illinois University.

Ken also had a deep appreciation for history and the arts. He co-authored the 2009 book Ruth Etting: America’s Forgotten Sweetheart, about one of his favorite singers. As an entertainment historian, he focused on the silent film era and was a longtime member of the Silent Film Society of Chicago. Among his favorite silent film stars was Clara Bow, the legendary “It” Girl.

Outside of his professional and historical interests, Ken loved music and playing guitar and harmonica. Rock n’ roll held a special place in his heart, and he especially enjoyed The Doors, Bob Dylan, and The Beatles. He also appreciated comedy in all its forms, from irony to slapstick, and enjoyed watching shows like The Big Bang Theory and The Three Stooges.

Ken also enjoyed betting on horse racing.  He was proud of his handicapping abilities, but was modest, rarely wagering more than $4 on a race.  One of his best moments came on Kentucky Derby Day in 2023, when he won $19,000 on a Superfecta bet with only $4.

Ken was taken from us too soon due to lung cancer.  He will be remembered with love by many people: his wife, Eva; his step-son,  Adam, his stepdaughter, Rachel (husband, Scott) and their boys, Alex, Nate and Tristan; his brothers, George Irwin and James Irwin; his sister-in-law, Linda Anderson Irwin; his nephews, Eric Irwin and Brandon Irwin; his niece, Jules Patrick; and their children, Ava, Braydon, Charlotte, Bailey, Olivia, and Jordan; his cousins, Shelly Terzian and Elle Scholwin and  many friends.

Please arrive at the cemetery no later than 10:45 am and meet the Funeral Director in Lane 4.
