Obituary

Kari Virginia (Haffer) Fencl Oakbrook Terrace and former Lombard and Hillside resident, 62, died peacefully August 16, 2022, in Rush Hospital after a courageous ten-year battle with myelofibrosis, a chronic leukemia cancer that affects the blood-forming tissues in the body. No one ever realized Kari’s pain as her radiant smile, kindness and endless energy were her signature of being. A graduate of Triton College and Proviso West High School, Kari had 35 years’ experience in the international freight forwarding industry including her final 9 years as an export specialist with American Overseas Transport, Inc., Wood Dale, Illinois. But Kari’s most cherished job was that as Mom, to her beloved sons, Rob and Mike. After their birth, she left work for three years to be sure they received her constant love and care. An advocate for her boys, she fought for Mike in the schools, opened the basement for Rob’s rock band and was the pick-up truck chauffeur for both boys for their dirt bike racing in Ottawa, Illinois. They knew Kari had their backs. Kari loved nature, especially butterflies, horses and dogs…she was the self-proclaimed “dog whisperer” whose gentle voice could calm any creature. A road trip warrior, Kari loved the family vacations to wherever there was a beach; Florida, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and especially her beloved Tybee Island, Georgia. A talented left-handed athlete, for 30 years she excelled as a softball first baseman. Kari enjoyed snow skiing, bowling, but was most incredibly gifted as a ballroom dancer. It was on the dance floor that Kari literally swept partner, Andy Polivka, off his feet. They were inseparable for five and a half years. She so dearly adored her father, Ralph Haffer (deceased) whose devotion to Kari truly was exemplified in her optimistic spirit and life motto “She believed she could, so, she did”. Cousin Len Mazanek her loving “big brother” and Aunt Virginia Mazanek were both so very important to the development of Kari’s incredible character. She is preceded in death by her husband Mike Fencl and Father Ralph Haffer. Survivors include her mother, Carrie Shutta, sons Rob and wife Lindsay Fencl and Mike Fencl, her partner Andy Polivka, his son Kai Polivka, cousin Len (Susan) Mazanek and aunt Virginia Mazanek.
