Dorothy J. Humphrey

September 25, 1941 ~ October 2, 2021 (age 80) 80 Years Old

Obituary

Dorothy Jean Humphrey was born on September 25, 1941 in Luxora, Arkansas. She was the eldest child of the late Alice Mae Mosley and Curtis Humphrey. She grew up understanding the importance of the relationship with Christ and always walked in faith.

After graduating from Carver high school, Dorothy was ready to explore the world and start a new life chapter. She moved to Chicago in 1969 and hired by the United States Post Office soon after. She had to pause briefly as she welcomed her one and only child Cortez Humphrey, who became her breath of life. She was a dedicated hardworking woman with 40+ years at the US Post Office before retiring in 2010. Her coworkers were like a second family.

Going on faith and the need to keep God’s covering over her life; in 1977 Dorothy joined New Zion Missionary Baptist Church on the westside of Chicago. She was a faithful steward serving on various boards. What she enjoyed most was serving Sunday dinners at the church and eating with her spiritual family.

Dorothy's faith remained strong as she dealt with her declining health. It never wavered and she was ready when she transitioned to glory on Saturday, October 2, 2021. She is now embraced by her dearly departed parents, three brothers Bobby and Shellie Humphrey and Joe Wright; three sisters Louise Rubin, Lurtice Humphrey and Fannie Mae Wright who departed before her.

Dorothy will be deeply missed by her devoted and loving son Cortez Humphrey (Cheryl); three grandchildren Jamila Catrice and Gerald Matthew Humphrey and Nia Sutton; four step grandchildren Darnell Moore (Asia); Antwan Stewart; Talesha Moore; Lanesha Coleman and eight great-grandchildren.

Dorothy also leaves behind, and remain in their hearts; two brothers Matthew Humphrey and Albert Wright and one sister Lillie Wright; a very close and best friend Thelma Tripplett; many nieces, nephews and host of relatives and friends.

Viewing will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 1252 S. Wolcott Ave., Chicago, IL, Funeral Mass to begin at 11:00. Funeral procession to Dorothy's final resting place at Hillcrest Cemetery, Bolingbrook, IL immediately to follow.
