Donald Graham Obituary

Donald R Graham, a cherished husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2024 at the age of 89 in Downers Grove, IL.  Born on November 9, 1934 in Pittsburgh PA, Donald lived a life marked by dedication, love, and service to his family and community.

Donald, affectionately known as Don to his friends and loved ones was a proud veteran of the US Navy, where he served with distinction during the Korean War. His experiences shaped a man of integrity and honor, traits that he carried throughout his life.  After his Military service, Donald pursued his passion for education and youth development by earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Teaching from Valparaiso University.  He then dedicated 35 years to shaping young minds as the Certified Principal of Anne Sullivan School in Prospect Heights, IL, where he was beloved by students and staff alike for his compassionate leadership and unwavering commitment to education.

Donald’s life was filled with the joy of a loving family.  He is survived by his devoted wife Pearl Markowitz, with whom he shared a beautiful and enduring partnership. His legacy continues through his sons, Donald Scott Graham and James Eric Graham, and stepson Steven Markowitz.  Donald is preceded in death by his sister Carol Hey.

Donald’s role as a grandfather to Andrew Markowitz, Leah Markowitz Ackley, and Evan Markowitz, and as uncle to Peggy Grenda was one of his greatest sources of pride and happiness.  He instilled in them the values of kindness, perseverance, and the importance of family bonds.

An adventurous soul, Donald’s love of the outdoors was evident to all who knew him. His passion for Outward Bound mountaineering, skiing and horses spoke of a man who embraced life with vigor and a sense of adventure.

The adventures Donald shared with his sons were not limited to the rugged landscapes of North America.  Together they traveled to exotic locations such as Belize and Venezuela, where they cast their lines into water, forging bonds and memories that would last a lifetime.

Donald’s impact on the world was as profound as it was quiet:  he led by example, showing that a life well lived is one of purpose and joy.  His absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him, yet his spirit will continue to inspire those he has left behind.

The family takes comfort in knowing that Donald’s influence will live on in countless students he guided, and in the love and laughter he brought into their lives.  His was a journey well-traveled and his footprint on this earth will be cherished and remembered by all.

As we bid farewell to Donald R Graham, we celebrate a life that was truly well-lived.  His story is one of love, service, and the pursuit of knowledge, and it will continue to be told by those who were touched by his generous heart and wise soul.  May he rest in peace, knowing that his was a life that made a difference.
