Cassandra Faye Frazier (McDonald) was born on July 28, 1958, in South Bend, Indiana. After a courageous year-long battle with cancer, she passed away peacefully on March 2, 2026, in her home surrounded by family.
Soft-spoken in voice but powerful in presence, Cassandra led with quiet strength, wisdom, and grace; qualities rooted in her deep love for God, her family, and the people whose lives she touched.
Growing up in South Bend, Cassandra held a unique place in her blended family as the eldest of three siblings and the youngest among four older siblings. This position helped instill in her both a spirit of leadership and a determination to pursue her dreams.
She attended Kaley Elementary School, Muessel Jr. High, Central High School, and LaSalle High School, where she excelled academically. Gifted in many areas, music became a meaningful thread in her life and family. She cultivated her piano skills both classically and spiritually.
Raised to love and serve God, Cassandra was deeply involved at Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church. It was there that she committed her life to Christ and began a lifelong journey of faith.
In 1978, Cassandra attended Purdue University studying Pharmacy. While committed to her studies, she was also a dedicated member of the Gamma Gems “Little Sister” of the Gamma Delta Iota fraternity. During this time, she was introduced to a DJ from Gary, Indiana, whom she would ultimately spend the rest of her life with.
Her strong work ethic and natural affinity for science and physics soon set her apart from her classmates. Encouraged by a professor, she made the bold decision to change her major to Health Physics.
Cassandra excelled in this challenging field. She was ultimately selected as one of the top students in her class, to apply for a summer internship with the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC). Though initially hesitant, she applied, was accepted, and went on to intern with the USNRC headquarters during her sophomore and junior summers. Cassandra graduated with honors from Purdue University in 1982, with a Bachelor of Science in Health Physics and a minor in Mathematics.
Cassandra began a remarkable 42-year career with the USNRC. She served as a Senior Health Physicist and Radiological Inspector in the Nuclear Materials Program. Her work combined rigorous scientific knowledge with extensive inspection and licensing experience. She fostered a deep appreciation for how the peaceful use of nuclear technology can benefit society. Cassandra was deeply committed to lifelong learning and professional growth.
She served in a voluntary role as an Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Counselor and was an active participant in Blacks In Government (B.I.G.), supporting advocacy and professional development within the federal workforce.
Guided by her personal philosophy to “do hard things well,” Cassandra received dozens of performance awards recognizing the quality, innovation, and dedication she brought to her work. Among these honors were the Federal Meritorious Service Award (Bronze medal) in 1999 and the Federal Distinguished Service Award (Gold medal) in 2019, one of the agency’s highest recognitions.
While Cassandra achieved many professional accomplishments, her most treasured role was growing and nurturing her family. On June 14, 1986, she married Raymond Frazier. Together they shared nearly forty years of marriage while building a loving home in the Chicagoland area.
She was a devoted mother to four children, instilling in them a deep faith in God, a love for sports, a strong work ethic, and a spirit of kindness and compassion toward all who entered her home. Though she maintained a demanding professional career, Cassandra remained fully present for her family and intentionally prioritized quality time together, cultivating a strong sense of unity and connection. Whether giving thoughtful gifts, cheering on her children at their games, or writing heartfelt messages in cards, each act of love reflected her deep care for her family.
As the years passed and her family grew, one of Cassandra’s greatest joys was becoming “Nana Faye”. She delighted in pouring her love and warmth into her four grandchildren.
In 1992, Cassandra joined Alpha Missionary Baptist Church in Bolingbrook, Illinois, where she became an active and dedicated member. She served as a Girl Scouts troop leader for nearly eight years, was a dedicated member of the Sign Language Choir, and faithfully volunteered in the church nursery.
In 2003, after answering God’s call, Cassandra and her family joined several families to establish Love Fellowship Baptist Church in Romeoville, Illinois. As Director of Discipleship, she oversaw Sunday School programs, Vacation Bible School, Nursery Ministry, and One-on-One Discipleship. Cassandra was known as a calm and thoughtful presence who led with compassion.
Cassandra’s life was defined by her trust and obedience in God. Whether in her home, her church, or her professional career, she approached every responsibility with humility, integrity, and excellence. Cassandra made a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the communities she served, and the countless lives she touched.
Cassandra was preceded in death by her parents, Woodrow Sr. and Laura McDonald; her brothers, Woodrow (Dolly) McDonald Jr., Dr. Eugene McDonald (Betty), and Jerome McDonald; her sister, Brenda (Otis) Gary; and her beloved son, Raymond M. Frazier.
She will be lovingly remembered and always cherished by her devoted husband, Raymond Frazier; her sons, Shaun (Lauren) Frazier and Christopher (Gabrielle) Frazier; her daughter, Calandria (Harry) Sampler; Tevin (Nabyl) Mills, who she loved as a son; her grandchildren, Michael Taylor, Calaiya Sampler, Giana Glory Frazier, and Josiah Kingston Frazier; her sisters, Paula McDonald and Gail (Karon) Kirkland; her brother, Dr. Paul (Gayle) McDonald; her nephew, DaShawn McDonald, along with many other beloved nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family members, friends, and loved ones.
